Hodge integrals and integrable hierarchies

Abstract: We present a power series whose coefficients are properly rearranged Hodge integrals over moduli spaces of stable curves. This series forms a one-parameter family of solutions of the KP hierarchy. In particular, for the initial parameter value, the series reduces to Witten's potental of intersection numbers of psi classes and the KP equations reduce to the KdV hierarchy. Our approach is based on a new treatment of the ELSV formula. It clarifies also many related facts like Virasoro equations or the lambda_g conjecture.
