Abstract: We deal with a model problem from the calculus of variations, namely with the minimization of the L1 -norm of the gradient of graph mappings. We discuss the relation of this problem to classical analytical minimization problems and its generalized formulation in the space of functions of bounded variation. Finally, we focus on uniqueness and regularity of generalized minimizers and end with a recent uniqueness result, which was obtained in collaboration with L. Beck (SNS Pisa).
