What is... a C^∞ ring with corners?

The category of manifolds with smooth maps does not contain all fibre products. However, the category of manifolds can be embedded in the category of C^infinity schemes using C^infinity rings. This larger category does contain all fibre products. The category of manifolds with corners can similarly be embedded in the category of C^infinity schemes with corners, using C^infinity rings with corners. I will explain the concepts of C^infinity rings and C^infinity rings with corners, and ideas relating to this. This is joint work with Professor Dominic Joyce at the University of Oxford.
