Compactification of the moduli space of abelian differentials and application to realizability of tropical canonical divisors

The moduli space of abelian differentials on Riemann surfaces is stratified according to the multiplicity of zeros. We present a modular compactification of these strata that is a smooth orbifold. As one application we decide which canonical divisors on a tropical curve arise from tropicalization of an analytic family.
