On the Ihara/Oda-Matsumoto Conjecture and its mod-l variant

Following the spirit of Grothendieck’s Esquisse d’un Programme, the Ihara/Oda-Matsumoto conjecture predicted a combinatorial description of the absolute Galois group of Q based on its action on geometric fundamental groups of varieties. This conjecture was resolved by Pop in the 90's using techniques from anabelian geometry, and a few stronger variants have since been introduced. In this talk, I will discuss the ``mod-l'' variant of this conjecture, as well as some of the key ideas behind its proof.
