Prof. Dr. Norbert Hungerbühler (Department of Mathematics, ETH Zürich)Fortschritte in der Mathematik beginnen nicht selten damit, dass man etwas Alltägliches, an dem man sonst achtlos vorübergeht, einmal genauer untersucht. Auch hinter einfachen, elementaren Fragen versteckt sich nicht selten schöne und zuweilen anspruchsvolle Mathematik. Davon ausgehend begeben wir uns auf einen Streifzug durch einige kurzweilige Themen der Mathematik.

Prof. Dr. Corinna Ulcigrai (Institut für Mathematik, UZH)Mathematical billiards are an idealization of the classical game of billiard, in which a ball moves without friction in tables of various shapes. They model many physical systems and offer an important playground for mathematicians to study chaos. In this talk we will survey some mathematical questions on billiards, spanning from prize-awarded work of contemporary mathematicians to problems for curious high-school students.
