Abstract: I will describe the classification of lens spaces that arise by integer surgery along a knot in the three-sphere. The classification is motivated by a beautiful conjecture of John Berge which seeks to classify the knots in the three-sphere with integral lens space surgeries. The classification uses as an algebraic-combinatorial obstruction defined using Heegaard Floer homology and a combinatorial analysis to show that the obstruction is sufficient. The talk will be friendly and elementary.
