Arbeitsgruppenprofil

Die Arbeitsgruppe Numerik beschäftigt sich mit der Entwicklung, der Analyse und der Implementierung von Verfahren zur Lösung praxisrelevanter Probleme. Schwerpunkt bildet dabei die numerische Behandlung von Integralgleichungen und partiellen Differentialgleichungen.

Integralgleichungen

Der Aufwand zur Behandlung von Integralgleichungen wird vor allem durch die Generierung und Lösung der vollbesetzten Systemmatrix bestimmt. Ein Forschungsschwerpunkt der Arbeitsgruppe Numerik ist die Entwicklung spezieller numerischer Integrationstechniken zur Reduzierung der Komplexität für die Erzeugung der Matrixelemente. Alternative Darstellungen diskreter Integraloperatoren (Panel-Clustering) reduzieren den Speicher- und Rechenbedarf zur numerischen Behandlung von Integralgleichungen von O(N²) (N=Anzahl der Freiheitsgrade) auf O(N log N) bzw. O(N). Die Weiterentwicklung dieser Technik und Anwendung auf praktische Probleme (Geodäsie, Populationsdynamik, Strömungsmechanik, ...) bildet einen weiteren Forschungsschwerpunkt der Arbeitsgruppe.

Partielle Differentialgleichungen

Die Entwicklung mehrskaliger Diskretisierungen für Randwertprobleme auf komplizierten Gebieten (z.B. Gewässern) oder mit komplizierten Koeffizienten steht im Mittelpunkt der aktuellen Forschung in der Arbeitsgruppe. Stichworte hierzu sind: Composite Finite Elements, Mehrgitterverfahren und Vergröberungsoperatoren. Bei der Bewertung der Verfahren ist auch die Frage nach geeigneten Implementierungen ein wesentlicher Punkt. Erkenntnisse aus der Analysis und der Informatik spielen für die Entwicklung dieser numerischen Verfahren eine wichtige Rolle.
